Pvt Madsen was born at Kjerteminde Denmark. He enlisted into the US Army at Cleveland OH on August 24 1872. He was described as 5'11", blue eys, light hair with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was tanner.

On December 1, 1872, Madsen reported for duty at Louisville KY & was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry. His daily duties were listed at Quartermaster Laborer.

During the Yellowstone Expedition Madsen was diagnosed with with acute dysentery. On September 13, 1873, he was transported on the supply steamship Josephine to the post hospital at Ft Lincoln in the Dakota Territory.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to the LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Madsen was killed sometime during the fighting.

Two days after the battle most of Company F was found on Last Stand Hill & the area between Last Stand Hill & the Little Bighorn River.

Madsen's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill
