Pvt Housen's true name was Eduard Gustaf Delliehausen, & he claimed two different places of birth, Frankfurt Germany & Pittsburgh PA. He first enlisted into the US Army under his true name on December 20, 1866 in New York NY. He was described as 5'8", brown eyes, black hair & a dark complexion. His civilian occupation was mason.

In January 1867, he was assigned to Company Company C, 33rd US Infantry in Macon GA. On July 17, 1867, Housen was listed as a deserter from Atlanta GA.

On July 5, 1870, Housen enlisted back into the army under the alias of Edward Housen in Cinncinati OH. On July 17, 1870, Housen reported for duty at a camp near Ft Hays KS & was was assigned to Company D, 7th US Cavalry. His daily duties was company cook. On June 18, 1872, Housen deserted again. He surrendered on November 5, 1873 in New York, NY. After serving a period of confinement, Housen was returned to the 7th Cavalry at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. In August of 1874, Housen briefly deserted a third time while escorting horses from Ft Lincoln to Ft Totten.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company D was assigned to Maj Marcus Reno's Battalion. Housen was killed from a gunshot during the Hilltop Fight on what became known as Reno Hill.

Housen was first buried on Reno Hill. Afterwards all known battlefield burials were later moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

Researchers have also identified two other names used by Housen. They were Edward Dellienhousen and Edward Hansen.
