John Baptist Donathan
Born: 09 Dec 1846
Died: 13 Nov 1926

John Baptist Donathan, son of Benjamin Franklin Donathan and Sarah Loyd, born 09 Dec 1846, Muscle Shoals, Colbert County, Alabama, Married Francis Jane Lyon 17 May 1866 at Fort Smith, Crawford County, Arkansas, died 13 Nov 1926, Brownfield, Terry County, Texas.

John B. and Frances Jane (Lyon) were reared near each other in Logan County, Arkansas. John served two years in Co K Gordon's Regiment Arkansas Cavalry Confederate States. He was captured twice. The first time, while officers were playing cards in the room where John B. was being held, he watched for his chance, and when a blue coat fell from the wall where it was hanging, he put the coat on and walked outside, got on a horse, and left without being stopped. He went back to his company and was later captured by the enemy a second time. This time he took a pledge that he would not take up arms against the union and was paroled. He then went to Kansas and worked on ranches until the rebels surrendered the villages there. This was the close of the war, when he was mustered out.

John & Francis Jane were married at Fort Smith, Arkansas while en route to Kansas after the surrender. They moved back to Arkansas after living a short time in Kansas. Frances Jane was born near Boonville. Arkansas, November 16, 1849. This couple reared 12 children. They moved to Texas in 1874, then moved back to Arkansas for three years. In 1877, they again moved to Texas and settled in Comanche County. John B. and a brother, Jerry, were Primitive Baptist preachers, and they traveled over central Texas and southwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas for over thirty years in their religious work. In the later years of John B.'s life, he served as Justice of the Peace for ten years in Oklahoma. He was voted into the office the first time and was asked to fill it after that. Besides preaching, he farmed and reared his family on the farm. He was also considered a good veterinarian. He died at age 80 on November 13, 1926. Frances Jane lived to be 87, and died February 22, 1937.

Parents of 12 children; Franklin Preston, Luvenea M., Luther Martin, Emma Louise, Chasley Richard, Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth, Lucy Josephine, John Thomas, Alex Kirk, Jerry Benjamin, Mary Edna, and Horace Brand
