Dorn enlisted into the army on January 30, 1872 in Chicago Il. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. Dorn was described as 5'9", dark hair, gray eyes with a dark complexion.

On February 26, 1872, he was assigned to Company B, 7th US Cavalry at Spartanburg, SC. His daily duties was listed as teamster.

On the morning before the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company B Company was assigned to guard the pack train.

During the Hilltop Fight on the bluffs above the Little Bighorn River, the pack train joined up with Major Marcus Reno's battalion.

Dorn was killed while defending Reno's position on the hill. He was likely first buried near the area where he had died. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
