Remember Grandpa's journal? "Carrie born July 4, 1903. Her mother died August 20. Edith came August 22 and stayed until November 27. Edith met Lizzie at the train when she came home from Wheatland. Edith left the next day for Lincoln." Sounded like Edith was more than ready to go, also that Lizzie's arrival was anticipated. The Tama paper reported: "Miss Lizzie Yates returned from Wheatland, Wyoming, Wednesday, where she had been a guest of her brother for several weeks. She is well pleased with the country and thinks of buying 40 acres and make her home there." The issue of December 3 says: "The infant child of T. B. Reid is recovering from a serious attack of spinal meningitis. Dr. Smedley is in attendance." Miss Lizzie was known as a practical nurse and a dressmaker. It is likely, as I have heard, that she took care of baby Carrie in that illness. It is also possible that she cared for mother Carrie before she died, if she had not been in Wheatland by then. Anyway, she knew and loved the family. (JR)

I have been looking at Dad's family history where he writes about T. B. Reid and of course describes his marriage to Elisabeth Yates (his spelling). Mentions that she was born in Ohio in a family of 12 children and moved to Tama county as a small child. Also that she came from Wheatland, Wyo to work in the household of TBReid after his sister Edith left on Nov. 27. Carrie LaDow had died on August 20, 1903. This report contradicts the one we heard many times from Mother. Which was that Carrie had hired Elisabeth Yates to assist in the household after Mother was born. The quote that I particularly recall is that Carrie introduced EY to her husband saying "Tom, I want you to meet the most wonderful woman etc etc." Shortly thereafter Carrie expired most likely from a ruptured appendix.
