John Thomas "Tom" Pitts, Nov. 10, 1927 – Mar. 26, 2020.

J. Thomas "Tom" Pitts, beloved husband of Frances Barnett Pitts for 72 years died on Thursday March 26, 2020.

Born in Greenville County, Tom was the son of the late William Heyward and Mary Lou Manly Pitts.

Tom was predeceased by six brothers, four sisters, and his daughter, Cynthia L. Pitts. He was educated in the Greenville County Schools, Furman University and The Institute of Insurance Marketing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Active in civic affairs, Tom served as President of Sales and Marketing Executive Club in 1962 and as its Southeastern Regional Director in 1963.

Tom also served on the Board of Furman University Paladin Club and its President in 1968. He was honored that year with the Alumni Achievement Award.

In 1971 Tom served as Chairman of United Way Campaign, Chairman of Board of Trustees, and as president of United Way of South Carolina 1976.

At age 18, Tom joined the US Army to serve in the Army Transportation Corp, and he was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sargent. After serving, he returned to Liberty Life and continued his education at Furman University. After serving as an agent for four years, he was promoted to Manager of the Western South Carolina and North Carolina agency where he served for 28 years. In 1978 he joined MassMutual as an agent and manager. During his tenure, he qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table for 23 years.

Tom was an active communicant of Christ Episcopal Church and he was also an associate member of the Peachtree United Methodist Church in Atlanta, where they joined the Timothy Bible Class.

Along with his wife Frances, Tom is survived by his daughter Lynn P. Lankford and her husband Mark; grandson Charles (Chaz) Thomas Lankford all of Greenville. Tom is also proud to claim as adopted sons and daughters, the 17 seniors of the Furman University 1988 National Championship Football Team and their families. in particular, Jeff Blankenship, his wife Tracy. and their daughter Brooke and Cameron. Also surviving Tom is his beloved Westie, "Jake".

Because of recommendations by the CDC and current Coronavirus precautions, a private family only Graveside Service will be held for Tom in Serenity Mausoleum at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Saturday March 28, 2020 at 3:00 pm.
