Actor, Producer, Director. Born in London and educated at the Rutlish School in Wimbledon, he received his training for the stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He performed in theatre from 1934 until 1940, when he began serving in the Royal Corps of Signals during World War II. In 1946, he joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre company in Stratford-upon-Avon for two seasons. He turned to producing and directing stage plays in both the United Kingdom and United States. After returning to acting, he enjoyed great success playing Selsdon Mowbray in the 1983 Broadway production of "Noises Off," which led to his nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. Among his film work, he provided the voice of Krebbs the koala in "The Rescuers Down Under" in 1990 and the Sultan in "Aladdin" in 1992. He was in Miloš Forman's "Amadeus" in 1984, and played Santa Claus in "Ernest Saves Christmas" in 1988. His television work included the role of the butler in the series "Rags to Riches" from 1987 to 1988 as well as the character Malcolm in the 1995 game "Phantasmagoria." Twice divorced, his third wife was American film, television and 3 time Tony Award nominated stage actress, Louise Troy. They were married from 1992 until her death in 1994.
