James was unmarried.

James was a Private in Company F 1st Regiment Virginia Cavalry.

The last record I have found of him is when he appears on a Register of Receiving and Wayside Hospital or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond, Virginia. He was admitted March 1, 1865 and his disposition was to Chimborazo Hospital on March 2, 1865.

Given that the war ended April 9, 1865, just a month after he was admitted, he must have died in Chimborazo. Family tradition states that Uncle Cook died in the War. He may possibly be buried with his parents, but I doubt there was any family there when he died to bring him home for burial and he is most likely buried in Oakwood Cemetery where most of the dead from Chimborazo were buried.
