Enlisted in the 7th U.S. Cavalry on 27 Sept. 1875.

At the battle of the Little Big Horn, he was a private in the Co. L, under George Yates. On that day each company left a few troops with the pack mule train to help out. Moore was one of the lucky ones from Co., L as the others were with Custer was killed. Eventually the pack train arrived at Reno Hill, where Reno, Benteen, and Weir had dug in. Moore would fight the remainder of the battle from there.
