Born in the Dominican Republic, Piri was the daughter of the late Tirso Colon, a businessman and civic leader, and Mercedes Gonzalez Sanchez. In 1936, the family moved to San Juan, PR, and later settled in the heart of Condado Beach. A graduate of the Academia del Perpetuo Socorro in Miramar, she excelled in both academics and the arts.

She attended the College of Good Counsel in White Plains, NY, majoring in business administration which later led to a career in banking. It was at a party arranged by a mutual friend that she met her future husband, Robert W. Cunningham, and they married in 1959. In 1965 the family was transferred to Washington, DC. There they raised their four children while she kept active by managing the household and joining the Puerto Rican American Women's League, where she held various positions for many years. After Bob's retirement, they relocated to the oceanside community of Palm Coast, FL.

Piri was predeceased by her parents; her brother Tito, her husband Bob, and their eldest son. She is survived by her three children, their spouses, six grandchildren, her sister Rucky, cousins, nieces and nephews.
