Sis. Evelyn Marie Berry was born April 12, 1941 to Maurice Berry, Sr. and Lillian Berry in Voth, Texas.

Evelyn attended Pipkin Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School and Charlton Pollard High School where she graduated with the Mighty Bulldog Class of 1959.

After graduating high school, Evelyn was asked her hand in marriage to her high school sweetheart Wesley E. Yates, Sr. They married on August 8, 1961 to this union four children were born Warren B. Yates, Juanita R. Petties, Lillian Washington, and Wesley E. Yates, Jr.

Upon marrying Wesley, Sr. she became a U.S. Marine Corps wife. She raised her children and traveled with her husband to various states including California, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington State. When Wesley was deployed overseas, Evelyn would come back to Beaumont, Texas to be near family. Wesley’s 24 years of service ended, and they retuned to Beaumont, Texas where she became a retail sales clerk at Montgomery Ward for over 17 years until she retired to become the world’s best grandmother.

She was an active member and served faithfully in several ministries at Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church. She was a Deaconess, Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, Women’s Mission officer and several auxiliaries. She also loved to sing in the choir with her beautiful soprano voice. She served faithfully until her illness, she loved church, cooking, baking, decorating and teaching the word of God.

Sis. Evelyn M. Yates departed this life on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Yates, Sr. of 60 years; her father, Rev. Maurice Berry, Sr.; mother, Lillian Berry; sisters, Delores (Polly) Robinson and Ernestine Ferrell.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Warren B. Yates, Juanita Petties (Steven), Lillian Washington (Thomas), and Wesley E. Yates (Franchessca); 10 grandchildren, Juanita Yates, Tarico Credit, Ariel Rice, Calvin Rice, Jr., Keondrea Hampton, Wesley Yates III, Jamazdon Powell, Kennedy Powell (Roy), Jeff Washington and Akiyah Nash; one great grandchild, Royal Patterson; brother, Rev. Maurice Berry, Jr. (Eliza); 2 God children, Kendra Thomas and Percy Collins, Jr.; special bonus son, Roger Briggs; she was a bonus mom and auntie to many and she had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

On Saturday, March 21, 2020 there will be a visitation at 9 a.m. until the Celebration of Life funeral service at 11 a.m. at Sunlight Baptist Church located at 1275 Rev. G. W. Daniels Ave. (Cedar St.) in Beaumont. Evelyn will be buried with her husband, Wesley, Sr. on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 11 a.m. at the VA National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
