Eugene died Thursday, June 7, 2012, in Harlingen, Texas.
Eugene Henry "Gene" Beier, son of Elmer and Emma (English) Beier, was born August 3, 1931, at Omaha, Nebraska. At age four, Gene's parents divorced. He lived with his grandparents until age 10, when mother Emma married Ed Machacek of Schuyler. Gene lived in rural Schuyler and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1949. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two years before joining the United States Army. Upon returning stateside, went back to UNL where he graduated with his Bachelors of Science Degree 1956. With his education, Gene landed a traveling sales job with Diamond V Mills in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He went to work for American Salt Company out of Kansas City, Missouri, for a time before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska, and going into business for himself, wholesaling dog food as well as buying and reselling tallow. This new business venture had several very good years before the markets changed and Gene sold the operation. He began servicing and salvaging windmills throughout south central Nebraska. This by far was Gene's favorite occupation, having become a "windmill man". Gene retired to Texas, selling his windmill business in 1997.
Gene enjoyed the warm weather at his home in Harlingen, Texas, as well as traveling, fishing, and square dancing. Over the years, he attended several national square dances. Gene departed unexpectedly in Harlingen, Texas, on June 7, 2012.
Gene is survived by his sister, Esther Svitak of Creighton, Nebraska; three nieces, Monica (Jerry) Cunningham of Bridgeport, Nebraska, Jane (Mark) Wilmes of Creighton, Nebraska, and Linda (Kenneth) Stangle of Hemingford, Nebraska; and three nephews, Mark (Kelly) Svitak of Colona, Illinois, Michael (Lori) Svitak of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Andrew (Joanne) Svitak of Riva, Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law Randolph Svitak.
