Born at Tupelo, Miss. two months after the Emancipation Proclamation, Mrs. Barnes worked on a cotton plantation during Reconstruction following the Civil War. She lived here the last 16 years.
Mrs. Barnes reared 10 children. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Inez Rodgers, and a son, DeGentry Barnes, both of Dayton, and seven grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

"Rites Saturday For Centenarian"
Services for Mrs. Melinda M. Barnes, 101, will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Greater Allen AME church. Burial will be in West Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call at the McLin Funeral home, 1130 Germantown St., after 4 p.m. tomorrow, and at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until services. Mrs. Barnes died Tuesday night at the residence, 108 Garst St.
