Bio by zadalew (Ref: "Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie" (1976) publ. Riley County Genealogical Society. Manhattan KS. pp. 359-361:
Samuel Dexter Houston Sr. came to what is now Riley County KS in 1853 and settled west of now Manhattan on Wildcat Creek. He had lost his first wife in Des Moines IA, came to KS; he then went back to IL to marry Tabitha Kimble Houston and returned to Manhattan. Tabitha was the daughter of James and Mary Ann Kimble, another early pioneer family of Riley County and Manhattan.
He lived to 92 years and lived on the place where he homesteaded for most of his life. However, late in life he did move to Saline County KS to be with a daughter and is buried there in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.
Samuel Dexter Houston Sr. might well be considered the founder of Manhattan, Bluemont College which later became Kansas State University as he worked in leadership roles in their development and contributed to their needs. His children were also major contributors to the development of Kansas; these are enumerated in the family links of this memorial.
