Thomas M. Gibbons, 82, formerly of Sharon, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, in St. Paul’s Senior Living Community, Greenville.

Tom was born March 19, 1936, in Sharon, a son of the late Thomas M. Gibbons, Sr. and Mary (Ebbert) Gibbons. He attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School, Sharon, and was a 1954 graduate of Sharon High School. Following high school, Tom served in the US Army and completed basic training at Ft. Knox, KY. He then went to Boston for his advanced individual training (AIT) as a morse code operator. He was assigned to Hokkaido, Japan for two years working in a portable station intercepting messages during the Korean Conflict.

“Gibby” as he was known by his colleagues, began his career at The Herald, in downtown Sharon, in 1957 as a machinist apprentice and became the head machinist in 1962. During the 1970’s he was promoted to assistant prepress foreman and retired in 1998.

Tom was a member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. He was active in the Mercer Midget Football program and Mercer Little League, as an assistant coach and served as the league’s president in the early 1970’s; he also served as the president of Maple Grove Condominium Association, Hermitage, from 2000-2006.

Tom was mechanically inclined; as a hobby, he reconditioned and repaired several vehicles which he would later sell. He once converted a Ford E-100 cargo van into a camper that slept six and took his family on vacation to Texas and Niagara Falls. He was also a self taught carpenter and built their home on Winner Rd., Jefferson Twp.

Tom was a very humble man; always willing and ready to help people or friends.

He loved to play and have fun. He enjoyed taking his family on many trips to Lake Erie, Clear Creek State Park, Cedar Point, Conneaut Lake Park, Farmer Jim’s and many afternoon adventures to Pymatuning State Park.

He loved being outdoors, whether it was walking in Buhl Park, riding bikes and motorcycles, fishing or golfing. Tom also enjoyed playing poker and bowling. In the summer of 1980, Tom received the City of Sharon Mayor’s Commendation Award for his heroic rescue of a young boy in the Shenango River.

He is survived by his loving wife, the former Marcia A. Revale, whom he adored and married April 12, 1958; two daughters, Deborah A. Stiger (Bruce), of Mercer; and Colleen A. Gardner (David), of Sharpsville; two sons, Michael T. Gibbons, of Port St. Lucie, FL; and Thomas P. Gibbons (Regina), of Harleysville, PA; eight grandchildren, Devin B.
