She was born July 6, 1940 in Floris, IA to William and Wilma Fitzgerald Hancock. She married Roger Burton August 28, 1957. He preceded her in death March 14, 2016.
A graduate of the Iowa School of Beauty in Ottumwa, Sue was a hairdresser for 32 years. She worked at Vera’s House of Beauty, and owned and operated her own beauty shop in her home, Sue’s Cloud 9 for over 30 years, retiring at age 55.
She enjoyed attending Women’s Club and had been a parent-sponsor for Alpha Delta Chi Sorority. She was a member of Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties Auxiliary and of 100 Women Who Care. She enjoyed antiquing and traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Most importantly, she loved attending her children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities. Sue was a very giving person in many ways. She acted as a “secret santa” for many families over the past 40 years.
Surviving is a daughter, Teri (Jay) Messerschmitt of Ottumwa; a son, Rob (Karen) Burton of Prospect, KY; 6 grandchildren, Jami (Travis) Shepard, Josh (Amanda) Messerschmitt, Trevor Burton, Chris Burton, Justin Burton, and Jenna Burton; 3 great-grandchildren, Colton, Caitlyn and Melody; 3 brothers-in-law, James Davis of Bloomfield, Bob Holsapple of Cantril and Ronald Young of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Betty Davis and Barb Holsapple and a brother, William Hancock.
Limited visitation will be open to friends from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home.
Private funeral services will be held Saturday with burial in Taylor Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
