Dr. Katharine Caroline Bushnell was the daughter of east coast natives William Francis and Mary Fowler (McKean) Bushnell. Several of her older siblings were born in Bureau County, Illinois before they moved to Peru, Illinois where she was born. The Bushnells moved to Evanston, Illinois in the 1870s where Dr. Bushnell attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1879. While in Evanston, Dr. Bushnell became involved with Mrs. Frances E. Willard and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Much of Dr. Bushnell's career was spent abroad in Asia--namely Singapore and India--where she served as a medical missionary and reform worker. Dr. Bushnell's devotion to those she was helping drove her to master seven languages. After returning to the United States she made her home in Piedmont, California and continued to live there up to her passing in 1946. At the time of her death, her surviving family consisted of two nephews and a niece. A memorial service was held for Dr. Bushnell in Piedmont and she was interred with her parents and older brother in the family's lot at Rosehill.Father: William Francis Bushnell (1814 – 1888)
