Lewis was a Lieutenant in the Governor General's Foot Guards during WWI, one of three Household regiments in the Primary Reserve of the Canadian Army.

Sadly two of his brothers died in 1918 due to complications from WWI.

In 1840 their great-grandfather Thomas Carling founded the brewery that bore their name, having emigrated from Yorkshire, England in 1818 and settling in London, Ontario.

Thomas married Mary Louise Chapleau in 1919 and they settled in California where he managed an orange orchard before returning to Ottawa to work as a civil servant. They had three children.

Later Lewis married his second wife, Winifred Johanna "Minnie Sylver" Noffke.
