Poet. Meyer was one of the most famous swiss poets of the 19th century. At the age of 15 he lost his father, his mother commited suicide in 1856. Meyer spent several years of his youth in Lausanne where he learned French and thought of becoming a french author. Meyer studied history, philology and painting. Under the impression of the war he decided in 1870 to write in german. Because of a mental illness he spent several weeks in a mental home in 1852 and 1892. His literary success started out in 1872 with the anthology of poems "Hutten´s last days" (Huttens letzte Tage). In the following years historical novels and novellas were released almost annually. He could never recover from his last stopover in a mental home in 1892. He spent his last years in hysterical coma in his residence in Kilchberg near the Lake of Zurich.
