Born on May 2, 1924, in Ferrisburgh, Vermont, she was the daughter of Leo and Clara Abare.
Helen attended school in Ticonderoga and Rome, NY.
Married in 1968 to the late George Shaffer, she was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital, St Joseph’s Rectory, Willing Helpers Home, Marshall Nursing Home, and Lexington’s Senior Day Program.
Helen was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit, and will be remembered by her countless friends for her ability to live life to the fullest and on her own terms.
She is survived by her sisters, Beverly Phillips of Illion, NY, June Hahe of Glenn Falls, NY, and Jeanette Abare of Gloversville, NY; her dear friends, Lynne Schumacher and Marion Balch.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Emma, Jean, Eleanor and Nara; brothers, William, Leo and Steven.
Graveside services will be held in the spring in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
