He was raised in Northampton County NC, the youngest son of Robert and Louise Long. He graduated from Seaboard High School before a brief stint in the Merchant Marines at the end of WWII. Marvin worked several jobs as he married and started our family, everything from the papermill to crop dusting, but spent many years with the Youth Center in Butner before retiring to farm. He kept cattle until his health began failing in his late eighties.
Marvin is survived by a daughter, Anne Gay Crews (Marty) and grandson, Matthew Crews, of Creedmoor, and 6 devoted nieces and nephews who visited and called him often. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years Annie Bennette, sisters Louise Taylor (Seaboard) and Bernice Sykes (Conway), a brother James (Pleasant Hill) and a nephew William. Marvin was attended in his last year by exceptional caregivers, Mae Hight and Faye Rich, who livened his final months, and nursed him to the end with grace.
Due to the current pandemic, Marvin will be laid to rest in his birthplace of Seaboard in a private service March 18th.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society of Granville County (PO Box 385, Butner NC 27509) or another charity of your choosing in his memory.
