Actor. Born Stuart Maxwell Whitman into a Jewish family, he served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers shortly after the conclusion of World War II. Following his discharge, he competed as a light heavyweight boxer, prior to finding his interest in acting which led him to study Drama at Los Angeles City College. He started out professionally with the Chekhov stage group which led to minor roles on both TV and film. He landed his first role of substance playing 'Sergeant Walters' in the TV series "Highway Patrol" (1956-1957). This ushered in a decade of memorable roles which included "The Story of Ruth" (1960), 'Joey Collins' in "Murder, Inc." (1960), 'Jim Fuller' in "The Mark" (1961) which earned him an Academy Award nomination, "The Comancheros" (1961) and " Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965). He starred as 'Jim Crown' in the TV series "Cimarron Strip" (1967-1968). He starred in the cult Science Fiction/Horror film "Night of the Lepus" (1972). Whitman received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998.
