DECATUR REVIEW 10/5/1925

ADAM F GEBHART DIES SUDDENLY
IN DECATUR BUSINESS FOR MANY YEARS
CAME HERE IN 1869
OWNED AND BUILT GEBHARTS BLOCK

ADAM F. GEBHART WIDELY KNOWN BUSINESS MAN DIED UNEXPECTEDLY AT 8:45 OCLOCK SUNDAY EVENING IN HIS HOME, 3164 N WATER STREET. HE WAS SEVENTY SIX YEARS OLD LAST MONTH. HIS DEATH WAS DUE TO COMBINATION ? OLD AGE. WHILE HE HAD BEEN IN FAILING HEALTH FOR THE LAST YEAR HE HAD BEEN ABLE TO BE UP AND AROUND PRACTICALLY ALL THE TIME AND HAD BEEN CONFINED TO HIS BED ? SINCE SATURDAY. DEATH CAME TO HIM WHILE HE SLEPT.
MR. GEBHART WAS BORN IN NEWVILLE, PA, AUG 22, 1845. WITH HIS PARENTS HE MOVED TO DECATUR IN 1869 AND THAT SAME YEAR HE AND MISS SOPHIA SOUDERS WERE MARRIED. SEVEN CHILDREN WERE BORN TO THIS UNION, SIX OF WHOM ARE LIVING. A DAUGHTER, MRS. MINNIE WILLIAMS DIED SEVERAL YEARS AGO. MRS. GEBHART DIED IN 1911. IN 1914 MR. GEBHART AND MRS. P. J. H? WERE MARRIED. SHE SURVIVES HIM.
WHEN THE FAMILY MOVED TO DECATUR IN 1869 MR. GEBHARTS FATHER OPERATED A FISH MARKET ON E PRAIRIE AVE BETWEEN MAN AND WATER STREETS. A. F. GEBHART WAS ASSOCIATED WITH HIS FATHER IN THAT MARKET AND LATER STARTED A GROCERY SORE OF HIS OWN AT THE CORNER OF WATER AND PACKARD AVE. HE PROSPERED FROM THE START AND LOCATED HIS SURPLUS CAPITAL IN REAL ESTATE IN THAT SAME BLOCK UNTIL FINALLY HE OWNED PRACTICALLY THE WHOLE BLOCK.
HE BUILT A LARGE ? STORE BUILDING THERE AND IN ADDITION TO OPERATING THE GROCERY STORE HE CONDUCTED A DEPARTMENT STORE. ABOUT THIRTY YEARS AGO THE ENTIRE BLOCK WAS BURNED DOWN BUT MR. GEBHART REBUILT IT BETTER THAN IT WAS BEFORE. LATER HE DISPOSED OF HIS STOCKS OF GOODS, LEASED THE STORE ROOMS AND CONFINED HIS BUSINESS ACTIVITIES IN THE IMPLEMENT BUSINESS,WHICH HE HAD LOCATED AT THE NORTH END OF THIS BLOCK.HE RETIRED FROM THE RETAIL BUSINESS ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO. HE HAD EXTENSIVE REAL ESTATE INTERESTS IN THE CITY AND THESE KEEP HIM REASONABLY BUSY. HE CONTINUED TO LOOK AFTER THEM UP TO THE TIME OF HIS DEATH.
OCCASIONALLY MR. GEBHART WAS A BIDDER ON LOCAL IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTS. HIS EXPERIENCE IN BUILDING MADE HIM FAMILIAR WITH THE COST OF MATERIALS AND LABOR. HE CONSTRUCTED THE OAKLAND AVE SEWER AND A NUMBER OF OTHER LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS.
FOR A NUMBER OF TERMS MR. GEBHART REPRESENTED HIS WARD IN THE CITY COUNCIL IN THE OLD ALDERMANIC FORM OF GOVERNMENT.
MR. GEBHART LEAVES HIS WIFE AND THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN: H. S. GEBHART, P. W. GEBHART, J. C. GEBHART, AND G. C. GEBHART ALL OF DECATUR, MRS. PEARL OWEN OF SUSSEX, WIS, AN MRS. BESSIE PECK OF LAKEWORTH, FLA. HE ALSO LEAVES A BROTHER W. F. GEBBART OF DECATUR AND TWO SISTERS, MRS. FANNIE DEWEY OF CHESTER, NEB AND MRS. IDA BREHM OF CARLISLE, PA. THERE ARE TWENTY FIVE GRANDCHILDREN AND EIGHT GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.
