Evelyn Isabel Vavruska, daughter of John and Elizabeth Arthur Sand, was born Jan 4, 1911, in Albion, NE. She departed this life Friday, Jul 29, 1994, in St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, MO, at the age of 83 years, 6 months, and 25 days. On Aug 26, 1936, she was united in marriage to Emil Vavruska and to this union one son and one daughter were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers John, Marvin and Ambrose Sand; and a grandson Curtis Maye. Evelyn is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Jim and Pat Vavruska of Niangua, MO; a daughter and son-in-law Clarissa and George Maye of Joplin, MO; a sister Clara Williams of Winner, SD; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born in Nebraska and then, as a child, moved with her family to South Dakota, where she graduated from high school. She then received her nurses training in Hot Springs, SD. While still living in South Dakota, she met and married her husband and began to raise her family. In 1953, she came to Missouri with her mother and her two small children and bought a farm near Niangua. For the next 8 years she was employed as an emergency room nurse at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield. On May 3, 1960, she became the Wright County Community Health Nurse at Hartville, a position she held for the next 20 years. She took her work very seriously and made herself available anytime to those who needed her. She retired as a county nurse in November of 1980. Evelyn was a longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Mansfield. She had been a member of the Hartville Athenian Club for as long as her health permitted. She also took an active part in the Hartville Senior Citizens. She loved playing cards, crocheting, knitting and making ceramics. Evelyn was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend. She will be long remembered for her dedicated service to the people of Wright County and will be greatly missed by all of her family and many friends. Burial: Marshfield City Cemetery, Marshfield MO.
