Otho Beverley Roller, 91, lifelong resident of Weyers Cave, passed away peacefully at his home on March 30th. He was born May 7, 1924 and was the son of the late Otho Brown Roller and Myrle Wise Roller.
He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets and served in the Merchant Marines from 1944-46.
Bev pursued his love of agriculture as a life-long farmer, teacher and State Supervisor of Agriculture Education for 39 years. He was a teacher in the Augusta County Public Schools at Spottswood, North River, Middle River, and Fort Defiance High Schools. In 1972 he became a Virginia State Department of Education Supervisor in Agricultural Education, serving the Northern area. Bev was associated with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) for 48 years as a student, teacher and advisor. He served as state president and national vice president and was the recipient of the State and American Farmer degrees. Teaching public speaking and coaching several FFA National Public Speaking winners were important aspects of his career in education. In addition, he supervised numerous state and national award-winning judging teams.
Bev was a devoted public servant. He was elected and served as a member of the General Assembly of Virginia in the House of Delegates from 1965 - 1972. During this time he was appointed a director for Virginians for Integrity in Government. He was a member of the Augusta County School Board for 12 years, representing the Middle River District. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Rockingham Mutual Insurance Company.
Ruritan National was a prominent part of his public service where he served for 66 years, primarily in the Weyers Cave Club holding a number of offices. He was a charter member of Bethany United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for nearly 70 years. He served as a district and church lay leader, and held various other leadership positions. He loved welcoming and encouraging new members to the Bethany Church family.
Bev is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Stroop Roller; a son Randy Roller and wife Annie; two daughters, Becky R. Shreckhise and husband Jim; and Jackie R. Dunsmore and husband Mark.
Bev deeply loved his nine grandchildren and their respective spouses: Jason Roller (Kendra), Jon Roller (Emily), Kelly Roller Jones (Brendan), Brandon Shreckhise (Jennifer), Maggie Shreckhise Wilkins (Chad), Trent Shreckhise (Kelsey), Bradley Dunsmore (Jordan), Katie Dunsmore Gaines (Daniel), and Carrie Dunsmore. He is also survived by five great grandchildren: Addison and Everly Roller, Keelan Jones, Wyatt Dunsmore, Emmett Shreckhise; and one sister, Jean Roller Houff.
He was preceded in death by brothers Boyd W. Roller and infant Stanley H. Roller.
The family visitation will be held Saturday, April 2 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church in Weyers Cave. The Memorial Service will be held Sunday April 3rd at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Fort Defiance High School. Private burial will be held earlier in the day on Saturday. The casket will be closed.
