Major Ian Thomas, 92, died on the morning of August 1, 2007. Major Thomas was born in London, England in 1914 to Albert J. and Jennie Thomas.

Following his service in the British Armed Forces in North Africa and Europe during World War II, Major and his wife Joan acquired a large country mansion (Capernwray Hall) in the North of England near the famous Lake District. A Bible camp ministry was opened at this location in the spring of 1947 and later short term Bible schools were introduced. Many people from around the world have benefited greatly from these ministries and twenty-four similar centers in other countries. One of these facilities is Ravencrest Chalet here in Estes Park.

For over seventy years, Major Thomas traveled around the globe telling people about the saving Life of Jesus Christ. Major Thomas' life was devoted to sharing the gospel of Christ with people of all ages from many corners of the world. Ian and Joan Thomas enjoyed almost sixty-six years of married life and were blessed with four sons: Chris and Bonnie Thomas (residents of Estes Park), Mark and Linda Thomas (directing Torchbearers in England), Peter and Elizabeth Thomas (leading the ministry in New Zealand), Andy and Laurie Thomas (also on staff at Capernwray, England). It was Major's great joy to see his four sons continuing in the same Torchbearer ministry which he founded sixty years ago, and a number of the grandchildren being fully involved in similar Christian service.
