William Henry "Bill" Dougherty, Jr.
William H. Dougherty Jr. “Bill”, of Belmont, Ohio lost his courageous battle against cancer on March 4, 2020 at Liza’s Place.
He was born in Wheeling, W.Va. to the late William H. Dougherty Sr. and Anna Marbaugh Dougherty.
Bill graduated from Wheeling High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Korea with the 101st Airborne in Pusan. Upon returning home, Bill tried several jobs before deciding on sales. He started his sales career as a sales representative with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. before beginning his long career in transportation sales and management. His first position was a sales representative for Eazor Express. It wasn’t long before he worked his way up to terminal manager. During this time, he completed a four year program in Advanced Traffic Management with West Liberty State College. He then was offered and accepted a position with Helms Express, starting in sales and then becoming terminal manager. During this time Bill was an active member of the Ohio Valley Traffic Club serving on its Board of Directors. When the transportation business started to slow down in the Ohio Valley, Bill accepted a position in Columbus, Ohio as a sales representative for TNT Freight Express, an Intermodal Company based in New Jersey. He was the Midwest area manager calling on accounts from Chicago to the East Coast. He also temporarily managed a port facility in Norfolk, Va.
Bill was then offered a position in Columbus, Ohio with a West Virginia based company, Tri State Express. He helped establish a terminal in Columbus for Tri State and within a year he was responsible for the company exceeding their revenue at this facility of over a million dollars. The company nicknamed him “Million Dollar Bill”. Bill stayed with Tri State Express until his retirement as Vice President of Sales in 2003. After residing in Columbus for 18 years, Bill and his wife, Carol moved back home to the Ohio Valley. They are both active members of Our Lady of Lebanon Church, participating in parish events and joyfully celebrating the wonderful new additions to the Church.
In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by a sister, Patricia (Allan) Holmes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Lee (Mays) Dougherty; a daughter, Lisa (Gregg) Kennedy; grandson, Riley Kennedy; two brothers, Robert (Joyce) Dougherty and John (Linda) Dougherty; two sisters, Jacqueline (Stanley) Wach and Jody (Don) Bobek; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many cousins.
Bill was a wonderful family man who loved his wife, daughter and grandson, and was a man who would do anything for his brothers and sisters. He will be greatly missed.
Friends will be received on Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 10 am until time of Memorial Mass at 11 am at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Wheeling with Msgr. Bakhos Chidiac as Celebrant.
