SUSAN'S OBITUARY
Susan Nancy Coles, 77, beloved daughter, sister, mother and friend passed on October 25, 2019, with her family by her side. Born December 14, 1941 to the late Edwin Wagner Coles and Eugenia Josephine Benneson in Covina, Los Angeles County, California. Susan is survived by her sisters, Cynthia Chiles and Mary Cordelia Coles and her children, Cynthia Lynn Pokal, John Joseph Recker and Catherine Cordelia Recker. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Rebecca, Megan, Lilly, Jordan, Joshua, Joseph, Julyssa, Brady, and Cooper. She was married to Errol Lynn Recker in 1964 for 28 years which was followed by a dear friendship until she passed.
Susan grew up in Los Angeles, except for a four year stint when the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia when she was in elementary school. She was very fond of her time there. The house on Coldwater Canyon in Studio City was always a gathering place both when Susan was growing up and later as the family grew. Susan loved all holidays, but Christmas was her favorite. Huge family gathering at “Coldwater” were the staple for many, many years. They were filled with love, singing, food and loud, boisterous laughter.
Susan graduated from Van Nuys High School in the Samurai Class of 1959. She joined the Debs, a social club very similar to college sororities today, in 1957. Wednesday nights were Club Night followed by Bob’s Big Boy to socialize. Friday nights were Girl’s Night Out with football and Cruise Night on Van Nuys Blvd. Susan and her friends used to cruise in her grandfather’s limo. She loved to tell stories about these times. Watching and hanging out with the Beach Boys when they were just getting started was a highlight as well.
Susan was an awesome mom. She loved spending time with her kids and took them everywhere she went. Once the kids were old enough, Susan went back to work for The Fish Market Restaurant. She worked as a bookkeeper (Del Mar), as a manager (San Diego) and in the
offices in both San Diego and Palo Alto. She really enjoyed her work at the Fish Market, but even more so, she loved her co-workers and the food, of course!
Some of Susan’s favorite things were spending time with family and friends, flowers, cats, family history, photos, and heirlooms, impressionist painters, cars, trains, good food, red wine, coffee, sunshine, the beach, the ocean, listening to music, concerts, reading, travelling, love and laughter… especially laughter. Specifically she loved purple Iris, her cat named Kitty, photos of her parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, Monet and Van Gogh, Austin-Healey “Bugeye” Sprites and red Ferraris, lasagna, enchiladas, burgers and chocolate malts, California cabs, cappuccinos, ELO, Queen and Joe Bonamassa, The Greek and The Belly Up, mystery novels, Hawaii, Sonoma and Paris - just to name a few.
Susan absolutely loved to sew, crochet and quilt. Many of her loved ones are delighted to have a lifetime remembrance of her in the blanket and quilts that she lovingly made them over the years. Her favorite items to crochet were afghans and baby blankets. As soon as she learned to quilt, it became in instant passion. She loved the combination of two of her most favorite things - sewing
and math. The combination of beautiful colors combined with geometric shapes, patterns, straight lines and counting were a thrill for her. She was honored to be a member of the Gig Harbor Quilters and was so happy to make many treasured friendships through their guild.
Susan was the brightest light. Her unwavering positive attitude and unconditional love will shine through all of us now. She will live in our hearts forever.
On Friday, November 29th, the immediate family will attend a burial service at the Coles’ family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles. Susan will continued to be celebrated on Friday at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank. The family will have burgers and shakes in her honor.
