A Memorial Mass for Richard “Dick” McLain, age 93, of O’Neill will be 10:30 AM Thursday, November 16, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. Inurnment will follow in the O’Neill Cemetery with Military Honors by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93. Memorial Visitation will be Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 5-8 PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 PM, at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill. Dick passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill or The O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93.

Richard Francis McLain was born on July 3, 1924 in Greeley County, Nebraska to Arthur and Wilhelmina (Bernt) McLain. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1942. Dick enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the USS North Carolina battleship. After he was honorably discharged on January 29, 1946, he returned to Nebraska.

Dick married Margaret “Marge” Smolla on July 10, 1948 in Grand Island. To this union, five children were born, Charles, Deb, Cindy, Mary Sue, and Lori. Dick and Marge were married for 66 years when Marge passed away in 2014.

At the time of his retirement, he worked for the City of O’Neill Water Department.

Dick enjoyed trying out new recipes. If he marked the recipe card, you knew he thought it was good. He also liked to fish, especially when he was catching blue gills. Dick was also an avid baseball fan, spending many summer nights up at the ballpark, watching ballgames. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren. On many occasions, when the house was overflowing with family, Dick would get out cards for a game of Pitch.

Dick is survived by his five children, Charlie McLain and wife, Millie, of Chino Valley, AZ, Deb Nelson and husband, Larry, of O’Neill, NE, Cindy Friedrichs and husband, Warren, of Spokane, WA, Mary Sue Saif and husband, Mike, of Lincoln, NE, Lori Beck and husband, Ron, of Atkinson, NE; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Judy Ita of Ericson, NE; brother, Pat McLain and wife, Jan, of Ewing, NE; sister in law, Elma McLain of Elgin, NE; brother in law, LeRoy Johnson of Omaha, NE; many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marge in 2014; two brothers, Don and Charles McLain; one sister, Marge Johnson; and one brother in law, Don Ita.
