Dr. Kelly was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, on December 18, 1941, and grew up in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, the third of three children of Francis X. and Dorothy Kelly. He graduated from Villanova University, then from the Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in Philadelphia in 1967, followed by an internship at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, and a residency in otolaryngology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago.
Following his residency, he served as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1974, stationed at Camp Pendleton as a doctor with the United States Marine Corps. Dr. Kelly entered private practice as an ear nose and throat specialist in San Mateo, which continued until shortly before his passing. For 45 years he performed surgeries and cared for thousands of patients at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, and provided ear-nose-and-throat clinic care at San Mateo Medical Center.
Dr. Kelly had two wonderful marriages: to Rosemary (Pietras) Kelly until her passing in 1996, and to Charlotte (Spritzer) Kelly from 2002 until his passing. In addition to Charlotte, he is survived by his son Peter (Theresa) of San Francisco, his daughter Meredith (Todd) of San Mateo, and his stepson Max (Jessica) Goldberg of Boulder Creek. Dr. Kelly is also survived by his brother Frank Kelly (Ellenjane) of Hamden, Connecticut, his sister Patricia (William) Seeger of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren, Liam Kelly, Silas Keithley, Rosemary Keithley, and Tess Keithley.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
