Following his residency, he served as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy from 1972 to 1974, stationed at Camp Pendleton as a doctor with the United States Marine Corps. Dr. Kelly entered private practice as an ear nose and throat specialist in San Mateo, which continued until shortly before his passing. In addition to Charlotte, he is survived by his son Peter (Theresa) of San Francisco, his daughter Meredith (Todd) of San Mateo, and his stepson Max (Jessica) Goldberg of Boulder Creek. Dr. Kelly is also survived by his brother Frank Kelly (Ellenjane) of Hamden, Connecticut, his sister Patricia (William) Seeger of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren, Liam Kelly, Silas Keithley, Rosemary Keithley, and Tess Keithley.
