SHARON L. (GREANY) ROSE
February 2, 1941 - December 7, 2019

On December 7, 2019, our much-loved wife, mother, and grandmother and friend Sharon Rose passed into heaven. Sharon was born in Rugby, North Dakota, to Harold Ralph Greany and Agnes (Tofte) Greany, the last of their five children. During WWII, the family moved to Seattle. Sharon graduated from Lincoln High School (Seattle) with the Class of 1959. She then went on to follow her passion of cosmetology and attended beauty college in Seattle and worked as a hair designer in a prestige beauty salon in Madison Park in Seattle.

Late in 1958, Sharon briefly met John Rose, and they began dating in early 1959, while she was still in high school. John and Sharon and married on August 26, 1961.The family grew with the birth of their first son Robert in 1963, thereafter followed by son David in 1968 and daughter Valerie in 1969. The family moved to Tacoma in 1970 for John’s career, which flourished in their new community. The family became six with the birth of son Christopher in 1979, while additionally hosting Dirk Helbig, a foreign exchange student from Berlin, Germany, for a year while he attended high school in Tacoma. Dirk became a beloved “fifth child” as a member of the family, even to this day.

Sharon had a passion for family and children and serving others, and was honored by receiving the Golden Acorn Award from the Tacoma Parent Teachers Association (PTA) for service to the community and schools. Sharon volunteered at three different elementary schools in the Tacoma area, and many of the children to whom she became known as “Grandma” and as a friend, still remember her.

Once her children were grown, Sharon eagerly enjoyed opportunities to be with her eight grandchildren - Alexandra Rose, Laura Rose, Timothy Rose, Samuel Rose, Kylie Rose, Mary Rose, Jonathan Rose, and Gwenna Boisture. She thrived in her life as a homemaker and enjoyed tending to her garden and welcoming the children’s classmates for cookies and milk or basketball games after school. Sharon and John hosted several neighborhood gatherings during Christmas holidays, and she was known for her traditional family “full spread” meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Sharon was also known as a social butterfly - making many friends in the neighborhood and local businesses where her funny demeanor and friendly hugs were warmly welcomed. She enjoyed occasional “get-aways” at Ocean Shores, Washington during warm summer weather.

Sharon is preceded in death by her father and mother, brother Donald Greany, and sisters Donna (Greany) Smith and Merle (Greany) Zournalis, all former residents of the greater Seattle area. She is survived by husband John, sister Lylis (Greany) McLaughlin of La Mesa/San Diego California, her four children - Robert of Lacey Washington, David (and Melinda) Rose of Puyallup Washington, Valerie Rose (and Dustin Coe) of Maury Island/Vashon Island Washington, and Christopher (and Carissa) Rose of Gig Harbor Washington - and eight grandchildren. One of the grandchildren is now engaged - Alexandra Rose (to Brian Grimsley).

A private burial service for the immediate family will be held at New Tacoma Cemetary in University Place, Washington. In early 2020, a celebration of life will be announced with details provided at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma for their care of Sharon during her battle with kidney disease. Donations in Sharon’s memory may be sent to St. Joseph Medical Center or the Humane Society of Tacoma-Pierce County, or a favorite charity of your choice.
