Businessman, Murder Victim. On March 15, 1947, the cabin cruiser "Mary E" exploded into pieces, shattering the air in Newport Harbor and killing financier Walter Overell and his wife Beulah. Daughter Beulah Louise Overell and her fiance George Gollum were charged with murder, with the motive of acquiring her father's estate. There followed one of the longest and most sensational trials in Orange County (California) history, covered with fervor by the national media. The verdict was "not guilty." Their relationship scarred by the trial's intensity, the pair never married. The daughter Overell ultimately died of alcoholism.
