Lying up the river from Warwick about three miles is Whitby situated on Goode's Creek. This was the home of Col. John Goode and later the home of his son, William Goode, the famous horse breeder (Tyler. L. G. Cradle of the Republic p. 218).

Sep 1712 - Joseph Goode upon his petition being admitted to choose a guardian makes choice of John Roberts to be his guardian and the same Roberts appeared and accepted ye charge, and Thomas Turpin and Leonard Ballowe became his securities for ye same (Henrico, Virginia Order Book, 1710-1714, pp. 182-183, transcribed by Robert Young Clay).

Joseph was born between 1692 (underage in 1712) and 1698 (boys could choose guardians at age 14). Joseph was one of 4 children identified as under age in John Goode's 1708 will. The other 3 were Susannah, Anne, and Thomas.

Since normally only family or very good friends provided security, then Leonard Ballowe was probably a good friend or family. John Roberts m. Katherine Goode, sister of Joseph. Thomas Turpin was the husband of Joseph Goode's cousin Obedience Branch, who was the daughter of his sister Martha Goode and John Branch.

30 Mar 1758 - Joseph Goode and wife, Elizabeth sold a tract of land in Albemarle County, Virginia, upon which Joseph Goode "now lives."

13 Dec 1763 - Joseph Goode of Albemarle County, Virginia sold 180 acres of land that had been patented and granted to him on Aug. 16, 1756. There was no mention of wife Elizabeth relinquishing her right of dower suggesting she was already deceased.

14 Aug 1761 - Last Will & Testament of Joseph Goode - In the name of God. Amen I Joseph Goode of Dale Parish in the Chesterfield County being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be God do this fourteenth day of August one thousand seven hundred and sixty one make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner following viz: First I give to my grandson Joseph Pleasants after the death of my wife my negro man Ned also my will and desire is that my daughter Mary Radford after the death of my wife may have the use of my negro wench Cockey during her natural life and after her decease I give the said negro wench Cocky and her increase to be equally divided among my said daughters sons also my will is that my daughter *Elisabeth Akin* after the death of my wife may have the use of my negro wench Beck during her natural life and after my said daughters decease I give the said Negro wench Beck and her increase to be equally divided amongst my said daughters dhildren and all the rest of my estate both real and personal I give devise and bequeath to my grandson William Pleasants and his heirs forever and I make and ordain my said grandson William Pleasants sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year above Written............ his Joseph (seal) Goode, marke. Signed, Sealed, Published and declared to his last Will & Testament in presense of Will(am) MOSELER, Edward FOLKS, Junr, Matthew MOSELEY.
