James Frederic Tompkins Jr., of Washington, DC passed away peacefully on October 22, 2017 at 90 years of age. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Valerie W. Tompkins.
Born and raised in Arlington, VA the son of James and Mary (Gardner) Tompkins, he was a lifelong resident of the District of Columbia. He was a graduate of American University, a Private in the US Army Air Corps and was Director of Aquatics for the DC Department of Recreation until his retirement. He was an active Northwest Washington, DC district-level Boy Scout, a Vigil-Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and a recipient of Scouting's Silver Beaver Award, the highest award presented by the National Capital Area Council.
