Douglas Phillip Rice, age 72 passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home around 6pm on Monday, March 9th.

Doug was born in Hillsdale, MI, the son of Beverly Redmond and Rollo Rice. He lived in the Michiana area for the majority of his life. He was a graduate of North Liberty High School, eventually graduating from IUSB after attending IU Bloomington. In that time he also served one tour of duty in Vietnam.

After returning from Vietnam, Doug came to the realization that he was a musician. He self-taught himself the guitar and other instruments, proving to be an accomplished singer/songwriter and composer. He went on to perform solo and with friends all around the Michiana area for years to come. Doug's message was to share in the joy of life while often giving thought-provoking meaning to what life is. He often reflected in his lyrics on the injustice of poverty, the horror of war and the heartbreak of loss. He was ever the poet and philosopher.

He is survived by his loving companion of almost 8 years, Barbara Beck with; his daughter, Neona Beverly Rice; his son, Dana Boardman Rice; and his two granddaughters, Cailyn Austin Rice-Robinson and Beverly Louise Rice-Robinson.

Doug loved life and loved all living things. He became an avid cat lover in his later years and leaves behind four cats that also love him very much.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to his charity of choice, the Meow Mission, P.O. Box 192, Mishawaka, IN 46546. Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel will be assisting the Rice family with arrangements.
