His step-mother Chiffon Reed was very instrumental in helping to rear him. “Melle Mel” as he was known to many, was exposed to a relationship with God at the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend E. L. Roberts. He received his formal education in the Austin public schools. Following school, he worked for Sonic Drive-In and Area Wide Protective road construction. In later years he showed his entrepreneurial side and was self-employed at the time of his death.
“Melle Mel” was married to Ciara Williams Young in Austin, Texas. No children were born to this union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandmother, Betty Mae Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Ciara Young; two sons, Melvin Charles Young, III and Braelyn Young; two sisters, Georginia S. Young and LeVonda Young; two brothers, Derrik Johns and Terrance Johnson; grandmother: Georgia Morrison; stepmother, Chifffon Reed; aunts, Margaret Young-White, Arlena Lopez, Rubye Swan, Wanda M. James, Stella Nixon, Juanita Clark, Nellie B. Sedwick, and Jaunice Jones; uncles, J. M. Moore, Jr., Jimmie Lee Moore, Leonard L. Maxwell and Daniel Carvin Davis, and a host of other relatives and friends.
