Kenneth S. Greene "Red"
October 19, 1925 - March 7, 2019
Mr. Greene known as "Red" by many of his friends and family passed away March 7, 2019 at age 93. Red was born October 19, 1925 in Charlotte, NC to the late Kemp and Dora Darr Greene. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clem, Robert, and Leonard "Pug" Greene and one sister, Leone G. Cook.
Survivors include Shirley, his loving wife of 69 years; three loving children, Vicky Lee (Peter) Jorgenson, Rebecca (Charles) Fennewald, and Paul Smith (Sherri) Greene; three grandchildren, Gudrun Ellsworth, William "Will" Greene, and Rachel Greene; and one great-grandchild, Clara Ellsworth.
Red was a 1944 graduate of old Central High School in Charlotte and enlisted in the Merchant Marines, making two tours to France during World War II, and then joined the Army in August 1946 in Fort Bragg, NC. He was a "Bugle Boy" and played Taps in the evening on the trumpet. He was also a rifle M-1 expert and was awarded a World War II Victory Medal before being honorably discharged as a Corporal on January 16, 1948.
When he returned home, Red enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill from 1948-1952, earning a bachelor's degree in Business. On St. Patrick's Day of 1950, he married his beautiful black-headed bride, Shirley Ruth Wolff of Savannah, Georgia in St. Patrick's Church, Charlotte. They had three great children.
He was an Alloy Specialist salesman in the alloy steel division of Joseph T. Ryerson Steel Company in Charlotte for 30 years. He retired in 1985 and enjoyed many years of focusing on his family and his hobbies, especially tinkering with electronics, reading current events and learning how things worked, and he loved listening to all types of music, especially The Eagles. Music was a big part of Red's life. He played the trumpet, marched in the Central High Marching Band, and sang in the Moravian Junior Choir. He also loved Carolina sports, a true born and bred Tar Heel fan. Red was a Boy Scout and earned many badges, nearly achieving his Eagle. Scouting was important to him and every time he drove by the church he would point out that was where he went for Scouts.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Union County for their wonderful care of Red during his last days.
A Memorial Service will be held 1:30PM on March 30, 2019 at St. Vincent de Paul, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Red's honor to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC 28110.
Red will be truly missed by his family and friends. Rest in peace.
