Mary Elizabeth Atkinson was born in 1909 to Guy F. Atkinson and Myrtle Laurella Herring in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She married William Paul Whitsett 22 June, 1933. She died in Palo Alto, California on 9 December, 2000.
WHITSETT, Mary Elizabeth Atkinson--Age 91, died on December 9, 2000 in Palo Alto, California. The daughter of the late Guy F. Atkinson and Myrtle Herring Atkinson, Mrs Whitsett was born on January 3, 1909, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. A business woman with strong philanthropic and family convictions, she lived most of her life in California, the last ten years in Palo Alto. Mrs. Whitsett was the first woman to major in Economics at Willamette University, graduating summa cum laude in 1931. In 1934, she signed the Articles of Incorporation with her brother, George and her father, to create the Guy F. Atkinson Company (headquartered in South San Francisco) known throughout the world for heavy, diversified construction and manufacturing. During her 55-year tenure on the Guy F. Atkinson Company Board of Directors, Atkinson grew from one of the small, pioneer construction firms in the United States to one of the world's largest, diversified construction and manufacturing firms. Known for her unyielding commitment to ethical and egalitarian valuse, Mrs. Whitsett was honored by the National YMCA in 1983 for her contribution to international industry and recognized "as a director of a major corporation for certainly longer than any living woman, and most probably longer than any living man." Mrs. Whitsett served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Myrtle L. Atkinson Foundation for over thirty years. Honored by both the City and County of Los Angles for her leadership in philanthropic, educational, and church organizations, Mrs. Whitsett served on the Boards of the Los Angeles YWCA, The World Council, YWCA of the U.S.A., the International Christian Scholarship Foundation, Church Women United, World Opportunities, and the International African Enterprise, and was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for seventy years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Palo Alto. Mrs. Whitsett, beloved by all who knew her, is survived by her children Myrtle Harris and John F. Whitsett; grandchildren Robert, John and Bill Harris, Jeff, Peter and Kristan Whitsett, Lisa Troeger; and eight great grand-children. To honor her, contributions to the Salvation Army-San Francisco Program, or the World Service Council, YWCA ofthe U.S.A., New York, NY would be most appreciated.
