Junior Riley (J.R.) Caraway, a WWII veteran born on May 26th, 1923 to Roy and Rella Mae (White) Caraway in Eldorado, Illinois, later moved to Nashville, Tennessee. J.R. died at home on August 30, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 ½ years, Elizabeth (Libby) Caraway, his parents, daughter Debra Caraway Moore, brother Clyde Caraway and his sisters Wayne Knowles and Wilma Clark.
J.R. and Libby owned a T.V. & Radio Sales and Repair shop in Nashville, TN. He later helped his son-in-law’s cattle business. Libby was the bookkeeper for Cherry Cattle Company and later, J.R. ran errands and stayed busy working for Dean.
J.R. was in active combat during WWII in the U.S. Army. He was a proud member of the 752nd field Artillery Battalion and was a member of Patton’s 3rd Army. He received many awards including: The Purple Heart, the WWII Victory Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Caraway was the last surviving member of C Battery. He was a bugle boy, drove for a General and was a welterweight boxer in the Army. He never lost a fight. J.R. was very proud to have served and have fought for his country.
J.R. is survived by his son Bill and his wife Cathy Caraway of Mt. Juliet, TN, daughter Susan and her husband Dean Cherry of Vinita. Grandchildren, Brian Cherry of Bluejacket, Jason and his wife Cindy Cherry of Welch and Amy Cherry Van Horn and her husband Kelly Van Horn of White Oak, William and his wife Carla Caraway, Chris and his wife Justine Caraway of Mt. Juliet, TN. Great Grandchildren Ashley Bertram, Cody Jackson and his fiancé Kennedy, Gage Bertram and his fiancé Bailee, Elizabeth Cherry, Katie Bertram, and Aaron Cherry of Oklahoma. Caleb, Hannah, Phoebe, Ethan, Austin, Tyler, Trey Caraway and his wife Ashley of Tennessee. Great-Great Grandchildren Riley, Charlee, and Noah of Oklahoma and Sophia, Hayden, and Liam of TN.
Visitation will be at Burckhalter Highsmith Funeral Home in Vinita on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 6-8 PM.
The graveside service for J.R. Caraway will be held Sunday, September 2, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Cherry Family Cemetery go east from Hwy 2 on East 200 Rd North of Vinita, Pastor Skip McClain will officiate. Military rites will be performed by the Ft. Sill Honors Team.
Pallbearers are: Ben Bertram, Jason Cherry, Cody Jackson, Gage Bertram, Aaron Cherry, and Kelly Van Horn. Honorary Pallbearers: Ron Craft, Brian Cherry, Geordie Jamarik and Jimmy Carter.
