Charles Giles was sentenced to death in 1827 for 'Aiding & Assisting Smugglers', his sentence later commuted to transportation for life. He was subsequently transported to 'Van Diemen's Land' and arrived aboard the 'Governor Ready' in July 1827.
He died on September 2, 1874, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, he died a wealthy man at 76 , and was originally buried in the Queenborough Cemetery in Sandy Bay, Tasmania, Australia.
