Elred Gregory Nuxoll, 84, passed away in his sleep Monday, July 16, 2018, in Grangeville. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Greencreek, preceded by recitation of the rosary at 1 p.m., also at St. Anthony's. Dinner at the Greencreek Community Hall will follow burial in the Greencreek Cemetery.

Elred was born to Francis J. and Marie Antoinette (Stolz) Nuxoll on April 18, 1934, on their farm near Greencreek. His life reflects the beatitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs."

He was a graduate of Greencreek High School and member of St. Anthony Parish. Throughout life, he loyally and humbly met his responsibilities to family and community. That included helping his parents and brother Adrian on the farm, where he drove tractor; caring for his parents, especially his father, in their old age; daily praying for his family; and community involvement. In Greencreek he was active in the St. Anthony Society, Knights of Columbus and Greencreek's Fourth of July celebration, including serving as grand marshal in 1998. He regretted that illness prevented him from attending Greencreek's 2018 Fourth of July just weeks before his passing.

In 2000, he moved off the farm and into Cottonwood, continuing in the KCs and more: volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital; Lion Tamer and Tail Twister for Cottonwood Lions; working in the Lions' Idaho County Fair booth; and serving and dining at Cottonwood senior citizens' lunches. In return, friends and family gave him rides around town and helped him with household repairs and tasks.

He rarely complained about hardships in life, but remembered kindnesses, courtesies and attention he received from others, from years and even decades earlier. To the end, he was the family historian and knowledgeable about farming and community history. He kept up to date on state and national news. He was a member of the Western Steam Fiends Association and for many years attended the annual Vintage Threshing Bee in Colfax.

He was unfailingly good-natured and accepting, whether toward a child who pulled his moustache or the Boise State Broncos or Washington State University Cougars who challenged his loyalty to the University of Washington Huskies. Strangers he met away from home weren't strangers for long. He enjoyed singing, and his voice could be heard quite clearly wherever and whenever he did, especially in leading "The Star-Spangled Banner" for Greencreek's Fourth of July. "Honyock" was one of his favorite words. It is the closest he ever came to cursing.

Elred was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the UW Huskies. Visits to his brother, J. (James Hilary), at school in Seattle spawned Elred's lifelong UW loyalties, and he attended games at Husky Stadium and visited the Husky Hall of Fame. He put his money where his mouth was, challenging people to a bet (usually a dime) on a Husky game. A lifetime of friendliness and helpfulness reaped regular visits from friends and family in his last weeks of convalescence.

Uhlorn Funeral Home of Cottonwood is in charge of arrangements.

With his passing, he rejoins his parents; and his four brothers, Merwyn, Adrian, Wesley and J. Hilary. He is survived by 15 nephews and nieces; three sisters-in-law; and numerous extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood.

And as Elred said when telling them goodbye, they now say to him: "May God bless you and keep you in his holy arms."
