"Rebecca R. Gilreath, daughter of Alexander and 1st cousin to Oliver H P Gilreath, married James W Hammitt/Hammett, my great-great grandfather's brother. The three known related Hammetts to leave S.C. and come to GA and AL were: James W (1820-1902), William Ashbury (1828-c 1893), and my line; Barham Foster Hammett (1842-1890).
The beautiful tomb stone for Rebecca and James, on the old Hammett Place, Lookout Mountain, DeKalb County, Alabama was broken up (appeared to be with sledge hammer) and hauled away.
I picked up a broken piece of granite."
