Christopher J. Whelan, 30, passed away Feb. 13, 2000.

Born in Portsmouth, he was a firefighter and shock trauma technician with Norfolk Fire and Paramedic Service. Mr. Whelan was a 32nd-Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Virginia Beach Lodge No. 274 AF&AM and Khedive Shrine Temple, where he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. He was also a member of the Virginia Beach Exchange Club.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy H. Whelan; his parents, John and MaryJane Whelan of Williamsburg; and three brothers, Richard John Whelan and John Daniel Whelan, both of Virginia Beach, and Steven Leroy Whelan of Buxton, N.C.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. The final call will be held at Fire Station No. 1, corner of Wood Ave. and St. Pauls Blvd., in Norfolk at 2 p.m. Thursday. Afterward, the procession will go to the graveside service at Colonial Grove Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. Chaplain Dr. Lamar Sentell and Pastor Lawrence A. Shoberg will officiate. A reception will then be held at Fire Station No. 1 following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Christopher J. Whelan Memorial Fund, c/o The Norfolk Fire Department Credit Union.
