Martha Irene Chandler Mitchell, 80 died Monday, December 23, 2019, at Wicomico Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salisbury, MD, where she had been a resident for the past four years.

Born on October 18, 1939, in South Boston, VA, she was the daughter of the late Harry H. Chandler and Martha Elizabeth (Robertson) Chandler and the stepdaughter of the late Elizabeth Mitchell Chandler.

She was a 1960 graduate of the former Salisbury High School. Upon graduation, she attended the former Bowie State University in Bowie, MD.

She was formerly employed with the former Meatland Bakeshop, Manhattan Shirt Company, and retired from the Holly Center in Salisbury, MD after 15 years of service.

She was a member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury, where she served as a member of the Usher Board and United Methodist Women.

Martha Irene was united in holy matrimony for 36 years to Yeacha Lee Mitchell. During the past four years while she was in the nursing home her husband would feed her lunch and supper daily.

Besides her husband, survivors include two children: Rita Kaye Ratchford, Shelby, NC and Lamont (Wanda) Mitchell of Salisbury, MD; six grandchildren: Briana Chandler of Baltimore, MD, Britanie Chandler and Kesha Collins of Salisbury, MD, Nataja (JQ) Boykin, Charlene Ratchford, Jerry (Michaell) Ratchford of Shelby, NC, three sisters, Dr. Geri Mason of Salisbury, MD, Karen Chandler Carden and Margie (Jack) Carrington of Newport News, VA, a sister-in-law, Rita Chandler, a brother-in-law, Columbus Roberson, an aunt, Ruby (James) Coleman, nineteen great-grandchildren, six nieces, six nephews, four step-sisters, two stepbrothers, close cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.

A son Bruce A. Chandler, sister, Barbara Crosell Roberson and a brother Billy James Chandler preceded her in death

A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Thursday, January 2, 2020, at Wesley Temple United Methodist Church in Salisbury, where friends may call two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron, MD.
