Family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm in the Church Sanctuary.

On June 8, 1958, Gene married the love of his life, Merle Helms. If a sure sign of a man's strength is how gently he loves his wife, then Gene Ferguson was a warrior of a man. They went everywhere and did everything together for 61 years. Gene's love for Merle had no walls, perhaps because of the love, support and constant encouragement she gave him. They were the fulfilment of each other's dreams. Their days began and ended with loving each other.

Together they taught and raised their two children to love and honor God, to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and by example taught them the values and importance of leadership in family and how to make a loving Christian home for their families someday.

God gave Gene many talents, and he used them all to give so much to his family. When he stood before God on Friday morning at 3:42 am, he could truly say, "I have not a single bit of talent left because I used everything You gave me." It is said that alone we have no talents, that they are an accident, but a responsibility of the genes God gave us. How appropriate that his name was "Gene".

His early days of learning EVERYTHING about electronics carried him through a lifetime of self-employment and working for companies that hired him for his self-taught expertise of anything electrical. He used this as a career at ATI Specialty Materials where he retired.
From Radios, TV's, computers and anything in between Gene was the first one called when help was needed. He had a lifetime ministry at West Monroe Baptist Church of taping all services. In later years, he had the tape ministry, where he sent cd's/dvd's to the shut-ins from the church.

He got interested in woodworking, self-taught again and the sound of power tools, the smell of saw dust and wood stain was always present in his workshop to produce any handmade, one of a kind pieces of furniture you wanted. We all lost count of how many times he changed the floorplan of their home with his renovations.

Then the kitchen caught his eye. Yes, recipes were something he relied on, some of the time. Most of his time in the kitchen was spent changing the recipes from this to that or completely making recipes of his own. At holiday time, you never knew how many cookies, cakes, pies, biscuits and more would be overflowing over the tables when you opened the door. Never a word about being tired or not having time to make something, just, "Here, try this new recipe."

That new closed in back porch he did years ago looked a little too empty for his liking. His woodworking skills kicked in and three of the four walls suddenly had tables built all the way around them with the most magnificent winter wonderland train village anyone had ever seen. He made the most magical, enchanting destination for his grandchildren to come to at Christmas time. Every year was exciting to find the new additions for that year he had added. He said he loved to entertain his grandchildren with it, but we could all see the twinkle in his eye as he brought it all together each year. We believe that was his excuse for fulfilling a dream of his own.

With any talent, hobby and expertise he had, he never abandoned one to start another. They all intertwined with one another to weave a life of a truly genuine, quiet man that lived, loved and gave all he had to his one true love, Merle, his children, grandchildren, great grandson, and his God. It wasn't always easy, but he made it happen. God never promised him an easy road, but He did promise him a worthwhile trip.
