Henry J. DeVries, 74, of Atwood, passed away Monday, April 9, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his children, ending a long battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 6, 1932, in Grand Rapids, the son of John and Sadie (Boonstra) DeVries. The family moved to Banks Township in 1948.

Henry worked in maintenance at the East Jordan Iron Works for 37 years, retiring in 1996.

He enjoyed raising pumpkins and rebuilding tractors.

He was a member of Belltower Reformed Church.

Surviving are his children, Luann DeKraker of Charlevoix, Sherri Free of Maggie Valley, N.C., Barb (John) Lashmit of Charlevoix, Butch (Deborah) DeVries of Charlevoix, and Kathie (Hugh) Lambert of Charlevoix; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Pluger of Holland, Ann Raak of Holland and Rena (Clarence) Kamps of Coopersville; and nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Sue Kamps, Alice Rozema, Ankjen DeVries (at age 4 in The Netherlands); and brothers, John DeVries and Otto DeVries.
