Waynesville, Norman Merrill Moore born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1931.

He was known as Merrill Moore, a graduate of St. Petersburg High School. Merrill attended University of Florida, for an Associate Degree and while there was a Southeastern Conference Swimming Champion, in the Letterman Club, and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He continued his studies at Florida State University where he attained his bachelor’s degree, and while there served as President of Sigma Chi, FSU Senate, Commanding Colonel for ROTC units, and honor graduate AAU swimmer. Merrill served with United States Air Force following graduation, then attended the University of Florida to complete his master’s degree in Finance and Business. He was employed and retired from I.B.M. with a 31-year career, all the Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida area. Upon retirement, Merrill resided in Waynesville, North Carolina with his wife, Helyn, for his remaining years.

His civic activities included; President of St. Petersburg Jaycees, President of Polywog LPGA Golf Association, President of Festival of States, Suncoasters, Board of Directors for All Children’s Hospital, and Board of the St. Petersburg Pier Aquarium.

Merrill was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Evans Moore; father, Oren Getchel Moore, Sr.; brother, Oren Getchel Moore Jr.; and his daughter, Marcie Jane Moore.

Merrill is survived by his wife, Helyn Holloway Moore; granddaughter, Hailey Riehl; and brother-in-law, John Robert Holloway.
