THIS MORNING

Pioneer Physician of Pine
Bluff Succumbs to Long Illness

Dr. J. W. Withers, pioneer physician and resident of Pine Bluff, died this morning at the family home, 1223 West Sixth Avenue, after an illness of about five years, following a stroke of paralysis.
Dr. Withers was born in Mooresville, Ala., on October 30, 1855, and was a twin brother of Charles Withers, who died in 1905.
He came to Pine Bluff in 1891 and was married to Miss Julia Scull on April 23, 1891. He was for many years connected with the public life of Pine Bluff and served as a member of the board of public affairs, board of health and of the pension board.
Dr. Withers is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Josie Speers and Mrs. Mildred Easby-Smith, both of this city and several grandchildren, including Juliette and Janett Speers and John Withers Easy-Smith.
Funeral services will be held from the family residence, 1223 West Sixth Avenue tomorrow afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by Dr. H. A. Stowell, rector of Trinity Parish. Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery.
The pall bearers have been announced as follows: Lawrence Phillips, Frank McNally, Frank Bloom, Dick Jones, Stanley Dreyfus, Walter Wilkins, Seldon Rosenberg, Dr. Frank Hurie of Little Rock, Wade Knox and Finn Huitt.

Funeral services for Dr. J. W. Withers, pioneer physician and resident of this city, who died yesterday morning at his home at 1223 West Sixth Avenue, were held this afternoon from the family home, conducted by Dr. H. A. Stowell, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Dr. Withers was one of the outstanding pioneer residents of the city, and administration of his profession was known throughout south Arkansas.
The funeral was attended by hundreds of local people who knew him as a friend and physician and his coffin was covered with floral tributes from all sections of the state.
