BERKELEY, Jan. 25—An old romance of Irene Rich, motion picture star, was disclosed in Berkeley today as news of the death of Elvo Elcourt Deffenbaugh , 54, real estate broker became known.

Deffenbaugh, member of a prominent Berkeley family residing at 2741 Regent Street, was married to the film star in Spokane in 1907 when the latter was in her 'teens. Their daughter, Frances Rich, who took the name of her late step-father, Major Charles H. Rich, recently achieved fame by becoming the first woman sculptor to have her work installed in Arlington National Cemetery.

Private funeral services were held for Deffenbaugh at the Little Chapel of the Flowers, with cremation following. He succumbed to a heart attack. Besides his daughter, Deffenbaugh is survived by his mother, Mrs. Estella Deffenbaugh; a sister, Mrs. Letta Gillice, and a brother, Leland, all of Berkeley. He was also formerly married and divorced from Leonora Novello of York, sister of the late Toto Novello, stage star.

Deffenbaugh's marriage to the film star occurred when the former was engaged in banking business in the north. Miss Rich was subsequently married twice following her divorce from the Berkeleyan. Deffenbaugh, native of Illinois, had made his home in Berkeley for the past 20 years, being engaged in the real estate business here and in Los Angeles.
