OBITUARY: Baxter, Angus McDonald (1895–1957)
The death of Mr. Angus McDonald Baxter at his home in Brisbane on Tuesday, 10th September, was a great shock to pastoral and commercial circles, particularly in Queensland.
The late Mr. Baxter came to this country from Scotland at an early age and received his first pastoral and agricultural training at Gatton Agricultural College. He enlisted in the First World War, serving as a commissioned officer in the 42nd Battalion. He joined the Australian Estates Company in 1920 as a jackeroo at Cambridge Downs, graduating to overseer, and later managed the well-known Queensland properties, Manuka and Thylungra. For a period he acted as the company's Queensland sheep pastoral inspector.
In 1943 the late Mr. Baxter was appointed assistant manager in Brisbane, and on Mr. Dibden's retirement in 1956 succeeded him to the management of the Australian Estates Co. Ltd., Brisbane, which position he held at the time of his death.
Angus Baxter gave willingly of his time and energy to many causes. He was a past president of Brisbane Legacy and Governor of the Society of St. Andrew of Scotland. He was also a supporter of the Red Cross Appeals Committee and the Bush Children's Health Scheme. His friends and business associates filled St. Andrew's Church, Brisbane, to capacity for the funeral service, during which the Reverend W. Young said that Angus Baxter was not only highly regarded for his expert knowledge of the pastoral industry, but also for his integrity.
Mr. Baxter, who was 63 years of age, is survived by his wife Ione Frances (nee Spenceley) Baxter
